Do you know your genotype? Do you know who you can marry?

     Ignorance is a killer; many are questioning my conclusion right now but do you know maybe that those nice, kind people who die and you are always like "what? that girl was too nice and good to die young" were victims of sickle cell disease? If you have ever witnessed a sickle cell patient in crisis (crisis is the period when they fall sick and it's usually associated with life threatening pains and agony), you will never want to marry someone who could give you the possibility of giving birth to one. It's rather unfortunate that more times often than not, sickle cell patients are usually the exceptionally brilliant, kind, gentle, responsible and caring type, this however makes their loss at an unripe age an overwhelming sadness. Consider this scenario, this lady is AS:

  • He is AS too, but rich and handsome just like a prince and he proposes to you;
  • You accept kiakia;
  • You decide to walk down the aisle with him by meeting the pastor;
  • pastor asks both of you for blood tests;
  • reveals you are both AS (carriers);
  • your parents discourage you from going ahead;
  • you remained obstinate and replied "dad n mom, but I love him, I'll be happy with him";
  • you go ahead and even opted for another church where they won't ask for medicals;
  • you got married;
  • you got pregnant;
  • you delivered safely;
  • and behold, the genotype of the newborn is SS;
  • you reinstate your faith and get pregnanat again;
  • the second born is SS too;
  • after 4-5 years, they start experiencing pains and other life threatening diseases;
  • you start crying; and you can't sleep in the nights;
  • and those words finally came out "Had I known".
NB: It's not a must that AS marrying AS will always give birth to SS, in fact, there may never be 1 SS child if they give birth to 100 children, It's based on probability.
